Hi,
Im headed to New Mexico for this fall and will be hunting for Mule Deer , Elk and Bear with my bow. Last year I hunted Elk, and MD in this same area and only saw 3 MD doe while hunting. I have been told by the ranch owner that there are not a lot of Deer there, but there are some really big ones if you can find them. I have hunted Whitetails with much success in the past, but know nothing about hunting MD. The area hunted has a lot of scrub oaks that were full of acorns last year. Also part of the ranch is very rugged and has nice parks with scattered aspin and large pine on the top of the mountain. Last year I hunted mostly water holes and saw plenty of Elk and Bears, but few MD. I was thinking about trying to find a game trail and set up a tree stand. Also was woundering if MD can be patterned like Whitetails? I am hunting the entire archery season, so would appreciate any tips on how I can maximize my chances of getting a chance at a MD.

When is the season? I dont know NM but I would be looking into that rugged country with quakies on it! MD pattern pretty well earlier in the year but they could do anything once the rut starts.

I'm making plans for my first mule deer hunt myself, but Mike Eastmans book Mule Deer Hunting Tactics has been a wealth of knowledge for me. If your into high country hunts Mike Eastmans Hunting High Country Mule Deer and David Longs Public Land Mulies have been good books, too.

I hunted mulies in late oct in northern nm last year. The best advice that I can give you from my experience is to scout Very early in the am and late in the eve if its not during the rut. You can glass em during the day but they wont move except at daylight and twilight. The only pattern that I noticed was the early and late movement. Just because u glass a monster one eve in a canyon coming down from bed doesn't mean he will use that 1 the next eve. They do however seem to stay in the same general area with the highest concentrations of oak brush. You find a good hillside that time of year with oak brush and there will be deer there at last light. Im still trying to figure them out myself so I hope this helps you out

If you're hunting in Sept I'd get up as high an elevation as possible right at timberline. Find some water up there and you'll find your bucks.
