Trying to see if not fronting the fee is increasing the number of people who are buying preference points.

This will be the first year I’ve applied but was planning on applying long before the system change. I’ll only apply for bear and points for elk and deer. The change will let me put in for sheep points when I wouldn’t have before the change.

I have talked to quite a few people who only applied for elk before but now will be applying for all species.

Im new to western hunting and this wouldve been the first year I applied for colorado anyways, but not having to front the fee was nice. I applied for preference points only. When will i get hit for those? Is it july 1st?

I guess CO couldn't figure out how to charge non-res $4k+ like new mexico... so they stopped requiring one to front the tag fees. Curious to see how much worse the odds get!?

Was already in the game on elk but jumping into the pool on deer because of not having the fee upfront. I think this will be a crowded pool but I think those that aren't great swimmers will weed out fast.

This is what my family application were before this year and now with the new system.

Before this year (14 applications):

Wife, oldest son and I in for deer

Wife and I in for black bear

Wife, oldest son and I in for elk

Oldest son and I in for antelope

I was in for sheep, moose and goat.

This year (15 new applications)

My other five kids in for deer

My wife in for antelope

My oldest son in for black bear

My wife, daughter and oldest son in for sheep and moose

My daughter and oldest son in for goat.

I still might put my other four kids in for sheep, moose and goat adding another 12 apps.

I was going to start CO for deer and elk this year but am in for 6 species because of the setup. I am going to start in AZ next year too, was on the fence but with their draw changes will go in for deer and elk. I’ll be happy until they change it to screw me and recruit another pool of hunters. I’m sure the CO pool is going to get DEEP now.

Any thoughts on weather or not this might potentially take away some pressure from OTC Archery units?

Am I the only person who anticipates that the preference point fee will soon be added to the moose, sheep, and goat points? And then the point fee exemption will soon be dropped for people who held a license the previous year?

No, you're not because those are all ideas that will generate more income. You're not so Quazy after all ;)

My exact thoughts. I have 10-22 points for elk, deer, lope & sheep but definitely won't be adding moose nor goat exactly because of your reasoning. Plus the massive pool of current point holders that would be ahead of me. I don't need any more hostage points for hunts with remote odds and potential future fees that will creep higher each year. States have a history of bending you over a barrel once you are invested. But I suspect they will wait 2 or 3 years to lure in the most suckers before they set the hook. No thanks. Been there done that. Stayed in some of those games but promptly exited WY's & MT's schemes when they pulled that.

Too bad Colorado changed. I remember when Oregon did the same thing, my elk hunt was 50% chance with zero points before the change. It instantly went to needing at least one point for 50% now it takes 4. Point creep sucks.

Over the last couple of weeks I have talked to a dozen or so hunters that did it just because of the application fee only.

When you don't have to come up with the total fee it is a lot easier to put in for all the species than just a couple.

yup, it use to be front the fees, and say get it all back minus 20x animal, nowadays these states drop the fronting of the tag fees, and keep more of your money! so it ends up costing you more, and worse odds and no one has to front the tag fees.
