I have never killed a western whitetail, what can anyone tell me about this unit? Or would Gen A and units 2 or 4be a better choice? Not opposed to paying a tresspass fee either. Are most of the whitetail going to be on private land river bottoms? I'm sure Gen A gets hammered with pressure in the black hills areas.

Don't know much about Unit 10. I hunt whitetails in Unit 2 on public land in the Black Hills every November. I almost always get a buck...maybe not the Godzilla, but usually a decent buck. It is one of my favorite hunts, second to elk archery in September.

That being said, the whitetail population in the Black Hills took a pretty good hit several years ago and is just starting to make a come back. This year, there should be plenty of young to medium bucks. It will take a couple more years for the age class to mature into big ones.

If you decide to go (not sure you can still get a license), you can expect good access on plenty of public land, moderate hunting pressure, fantastic scenery and a medium sized whitetail buck.

Doesn't get much better than that!

Thanks for posting this information. Is there good rotting activity going on during this hunt? I have to many points right now. But after I burn them in 2016 I would love to take my dad on a whitetail hunt. Any information would be great. What is the weather like in November? Can a guy just take off in the morning and creep around all day? Thanks again. Good luck this season.

They should be starting to rut early Nov into Mid. While I can't speak for weather in the NE corner, I can tell you this, last year when I was up by gillete we got 6" of snow over night on Oct 2nd.

Thanks for the info Highplains

I agree The weather can be pretty unpredictable that time of year. Ten below with blowing snow one day and fifty and sunny the next. I also agree with rut timing I think. There are places along the Cheyenne river that are public but they are not well marked as public and a lot of the river bottom is private like you were saying. There are places that have trespass fees but I don't have a direction to point you in sorry about that. Mule deer unit ten just got changed to limited quota. .

Anyway along the Cheyenne river in 10 and further east could give you a good chance at a western whitetail I think but I would lean towards getting on a ranch or doing quite a bit of leg work. Good luck

Paying a trespass on a ranch with river bottom would be your best bet. The above post is correct, area 10 is likely going limited for type 1, but it has been limited for type 3. The g&f per ranchers concerns have waged all out war on whitetails the last several years, so that combined with disease outbreaks does have numbers down.

As for the rut, whitetails tend to rut a little later than mule deer. For whitetails, the later in November the better. Of course that increases your chances of bad weather.
