Deer Preference Points

I am going on a private land pronghorn hunt in unit 23 next season. I would like to draw a deer tag as well for General Unit C as well. I currently have 7 preference points and don't want to waste them on a easy draw general tag. My question is can I apply for a special draw unit c deer tag as a second choice and if I can and I am successful on my second choice do I retain my preference points? Thanks for any answers or advice.

Yep, just apply for something you will not draw as first choice, or something you really do want if you do draw.

A unit that takes more than 7 points and offers no random tags would work.

The Red Desert hunts would probably work well.
