Deer in Unit 10...

Wondering about deer numbers and access. Looks like a lot of BLM land, just not sure how much, if any, is landlocked. I have 3 points, and it seems like I could draw for the second rifle season with those. Never killed a mulie and would be happy with a nice 150-160 class buck.

Hey rickinnoco....I think it will take 12 or more points to draw a Unit 10 second season rifle tag in Colorado. Your goal of a 150-160 class buck could be met on numerous units in Colorado. Are you a resident or a non resident of Colorado?

Hey Umpqua. Thanks for the response. Resident for 6 months now, thank god. According to the stats from DOW, the second season (first rifle for deer I guess, Oct 22-30 in 2011) took 3 points for a resident last year and ELEVEN for a non-resident! Muzzleloader took 5, 3rd rifle took 9, and 4th rifle took FOURTEEN. So, I figured there were some big deer there, and there must be a reason the second season takes less. Archery took 3 for a resident, which is what I'd really like to do, but I'd also like to get a nice buck under my belt. Shameless killer....I figured I'd use the points I have now for a decent hunt, and then start saving them up again for a great unit in 10 years or so.

What I'd really like is one of those sheep you have in your avatar. Was that Oregon?

That's a is a ram I took on a solo backpack hunt in Unit 5 in Wyoming.

20 points? Holy crap! I want to film you on that hunt when you go! I will let you know what I find. I hope to go out there this spring shed hunting, but I don't know exactly where or when. Somehow, my search for possible units is expanding

You wanted to see a bigger pic of the sheep. We actually had a string where two of my sons and I drew four sheep tags in eight years. Three of these tags were drawn three years in a row...which was unbelievable.

2001: My Nevada desert sheep. I drew with max bonus points.

2007: My son's ram from Unit 5 in Wyoming. He drew the tag in the random draw.

2008: Another one of my sons in Arizona with his desert sheep. He drew with only 4 points.

2009: My bighorn from Unit 5 in Wyoming. I drew with a ton of points.

WOW!!! Thanks for posting these Jim! I could look at sheep pictures all day. Your son's desert ram is AWESOME! I love the character with the shaved horn. And you're halfway to the slam...with the toughest tag out of the way! Now a quick Dall hunt, and 50 grand for Stone's and you're my new hero! Haha. Seriously, congratulations to you and your sons. You guys accomplished what most hunters only dream about....now if I could just get that 160 class mulie this fall

Lol...I sure do hope you do get that buck this year.

I actually got my dall in 1986, my dad took me on a hunt for my college graduation. He did not kill a ram so the next year he rebooked two spots and planned to take my brother, then my uncle as a back-up. When no one could make it, he asked me and it didn't take any arm twisting for me to agree to go...lol. I took my best ram a 167 B&C (39.5" x 15" bases) fanning ram on that hunt. The next year (1988) I drew a Colorado bighorn in Unit 26 (basically the same unit as deer unit 55), but was getting married in the middle of the season, so a quick trip back, I ended up taking a younger 3/4 curl bighorn in Unit 26. I did a plant start-up in Europe for three years, I saw the writing on the wall that the prices are just starting to take off, so I booked a Stone hunt in ($13K at that time) for the year I returned (1995), and took a 160 B&C Stone. So that made my 2001 Nevada desert sheep my "slam ram". So with another desert and a dall I'd have a second slam. I am pretty certain I'll draw another desert in the next 15 years or so, if I stick with the applications in Arizona, but really don't have any plans to hunt dall sheep again.

BTW...I graduated high school in 1986. My dad didn't offer me a sheep hunt...

hey rockinnoco
i hunted in unit 10 3 years ago and it will take you four to six points to draw
they have been cutting tags ther for over 4 years the dow said he used to have 8000 deer there and now down to 3500-4000
the elk are boomin in that unit and hurtin the deer #'s
but if you do draw i have info() pulled a 184 typical and a 206 nontypical)

Thanks CoBack. That's awesome. I'd be happy with a lesser deer than 184 for sure. Sounds like they need to make it a little easier to draw elk there huh? Is access an issue at all? It doesn't seem like it would be.

Hey CoBackcountry: How did the quality of the elk look on Unit 10. I have 20 points for elk and would have a descent shot at a muzzleloader or rifle tag this year. I have not really been seriously considering Unit 10 since I had heard the trophy quality had been declining the past several years.

I'd just recommend what my dad taught me...work hard, be generous with those you love, spend less then you make, make long term plans and save for them. I'd recommend Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. ;-)
