Waiting on the 21St to start hunting the PIW deer tag! Can't wait. We have a few bombers scoped out and I hope they are still around opening day.

I wish. It's a buddy of mine. This is the place for sure. Poor guy been waiting all season to hunt this area but I would wait too if it was mine.

Once in a lifetime tag! I'm jealous! Be sure to post pics. some big bucks come out of there on this late season hunt! I am waiting to get drawn for that zone for the late season archery..... One day. This is turning it to be an expensive buck for you though.
Hhahah no dout! I was lucky enough that I only had to pay $500 out of the $1400 to fix my truck. Oh well pay to play I guess. This guy drew this same area last year but the early rifle hunt and there wasnt much to see. He didn't fill his tag. He also drew Elk last year and didn't fill that either! I promised him a 190+ if he would wait till this late hunt. I've got a few spots that I have a couple hanging out in so I hope to live up to my promise. I would really like to have some snow to really bring down the big boys but the post rut is just about to trickle out so I hope they hang around a little longer.

Thanks man I appreciate it. I haven't spent a lot of time in the southern side it would be nice to have some guidance.
I've found some real awesome spots that hold big deer. Although they are best during the rut and after. That or lots of snow. That's what it takes to get the big ones down to the lower country. I do know of a couple places up high to look at before the snow hits too but haven't been in that country in along time and I wouldn't mine going back if someone had a tag. Either way I love to scout even if it's not my tag and find new hiddy holes for bucks.

I hope you find a great buck. I'd really love to hear how your hunt goes, I am sitting on 19 non-resident deer points. The past few years I have been applying in the Caliente area. If you are willing to share any info at all, feel free to PM me. Kill a big un.
I haven't hunted in the Caliente area at all. I know it is a good area to hunt but don't know the area at all.
The first 5 days have only produced 160" bucks so far. We have seen a ton of deer but no shooters. I think because of the lack of snow is what our issue is. I'm going to the Carson City area to check a canyon a bow hunter I know killed a 32" 5x5 buck in the 190" class and there was a bigger one with the buck he killed. I hope to make it so scout the canyon on Tue. But we are getting busy at work and time for me is getting short. I've got just a couple more day to help then he will be on his own.
With that many points is there a particular reason your trying to draw in Caliente?
Well here's my update of my buddy's PIW tag. What a disappointment. No snow and now the warm weather has just kick our butts! I was only able to go for 3 full days of hunting and a few hrs here and there spotting from easy access areas were I could look from my truck. My Buddy Jason hunted his ass off and has the blisters on his feet to prove it.
We started off Garson Rd with a 2 hr hike in to my honey hole and found only one non typical 185" buck, he passed, for the next 2 days we looked over the entire Pevine Mt with nothing over a 160" and a huge 3x3 about 27" tall and real heavy but not a shooter for this tag. Jason continued to hunt Garson Rd for the next few days continuing to only see 160" bucks. I had a lead on a monster in Ash Canyon by Carson City and told Jason about it and how to get there but he decided to stay with the Garson Rd area. (I found out a 36" wide 5x5 was killed in Ash Canyon shortly after). This afternoon I was able to get away for a few hrs to scout for Jason around the area by the New expansion bridge being built, we call it Galina Mountain, Jason and his dad were there looking as well only we were on different sides of the Mt. Jason text me he found a 150" buck that was a 4x5 and was heavy so he was going to try to get closer for a better look. Just as that text came through I had located a few bucks on a hill side about 1000 yards from me. One of them looked better then a 150" I was able to drive closer to him since I was in my truck on a dirt road and you probably know what happen last time I was out in my work truck. Anyway I got with in 500 yards of him and saw he was a solid 170" 4x4 with a 2" sticker on his right G2. I immediately text Jason not to shoot that buck and that I found a good buck for him to look at. Then he text me DUCK! I thought oh shizz he's going to shoot. Then he called me. He asked me about the buck I was looking at, I was hopping he got my text in time before he shot but he had shot the buck. Man! I was so bummed out for him. He hunted his ass off and shot a 150" buck after all that work. I didn't have the heart to tell him this buck was so much better and so I down played him to Jason so I wouldnt make him feel bad. All in all he was disappointed he only got a small buck with such a awesome tag but he can say he worked very hard and kept to his benchmark of a 180"+ typical to the end. He said he felt the pressure of not getting anything and being away from home every day was wearing him down so he was done and took the buck.

That's too bad man. I know a guy who drew that tag 3-4 years ago and ended up shooting a 23" 3x3. It's a shame. The weather has been way hot! I still want to see the buck!
