make sure you ask questions about the actual guide. Does the outfitter have guides that come back every year. Have the packers packed before?
The reason i say this is, I went to alaska and had more time in the mountains of alaska than the guide did. The packer had never worn a full size pack before. We ran out of food, but i did get my ram. I guess i should have sheep hunted when i lived up there.

Booked my stone hunt in 1973! $1750 for a 14-day, horseback hunt. I'm sure some of you were in diapers or maybe only a gleam in your father's eyes. FYI - It was just as hard to justify paying that amount of money (seemed huge at the time) back then as it is to spend $17,500 on a hunt today.

If I was looking for a good quality dall hunt today for as low a cost as possible, I would give Atchenson's - Hunting Consultants, in Butte, Montana a call. Discuss your financial situation and perhaps get on their cancellation list.

Here is a picture of my 10-year old stone ram taken near Muncho Lake, B.C. in September, 1973. I am very happy I bit the bullet and paid the price back then.

Beautiful ram!

Billy Molls is the real deal when it comes to Dall Sheep. Deltana, on the other hand, not so much. Billy worked for them, and gave them a great rep. They use a variety of guides however, some good, and some way below average. Unless you know who you are going with, exercise caution.

leaving sunday for a hunt in the wrangells. looking forward to it.
Hunt never happened. Flew into Pioneer Outfitters lodge and the crew wasn't there. Flew out 6 days later and the crew still wasn't there. Talk about being ripped off.

I hunted with Max schwab and had an excellent hunt this past August shooting a ten year old full curl ram. I wouldn't hesitate to go with him again it was a great trip.

Forum friends,

It's disappointing to me that someone had a bad experience with one the the Guide/Outfitters here in Alaska. I'm not a guide but I do know quite a few of them and I know that some are really great, others not so much.

If anyone does come to Alaska and experiences one of the later type, you do have some recourse. Alaska, through the Department of Commerce and Economic Development, has the Big Game Commercial Services Board (BGCSB). They would appreciate hearing about your experience and have some excellent investigators that would follow up with you.

If I were planning a guided hunt in Alaska, I would call them and touch base about any guide/outfitter that you are considering. Be sure to ask if they are currently licensed and what areas and species that they are qualified for. Know what area the guide generally hunts and call the local Wildlife Trooper and the local Fish and Game biologist in those areas and seek their opinions.

There is never a "guaranteed" hunt up here, weather is always an issue, but if you spend the time, effort and money to make a guided hunt here, you deserve the best from your chosen guide/outfitter.

I do know a lot of them, never hesitate to contact me on the forum and I would be happy to do whatever I can to point you the right direction or steer you away from the wrong one, if possible.

Good hunting to you all!

I did a hunt with Ellis Big Game guides, also called Devils Mountain Lodge, www.DevilsMountainLodge.com, out of Nebesna (Wrangell St. Elias National Park). I flew into Anchorage, rented a car and drove to the lodge. Great way to see Alaska. You can also get on their cancellation hunt notification list for a reduced price hunt if you are willing to wait. They also hunt Moose and Bear. Good guides and pilots.
