Headed up to the crazys after my college orientation tomorrow to try and find some elk before archery season. Is this area worth checking out? Its the closest place I can seem to find decent elk hunting to Billings. I have a couple of spots ive been looking over on the map and google earth that look pretty good. Any thoughts?

I went up the boulder river drainage for 5 days last week and didnt see any sign of an elk, alot of private land and the trails i took into the wilderness area were void of any vegetation or sign. Ill try out the crazys this week and see if I cant turn anything up. Thanks bitterroot you have helped me with all of my questions relating to montana so far! its been a big help

Give us a report when you get back. We drew a LE permit in that area.

Didnt see a single elk in the area I was in, just TONS of moo cows everywhere I went and a really nice bear. So I took bitterrootbulls advice and just kept moving until I found something and that led me to the little belts where I saw my first elk since ive been in montana. Ran into a few of them so I guess this could be a starting point. Just not as many or as much sign as I thought id be seeing here in montana compared to washington. Im putting the miles on my truck and boots and Im just not seeing what I think I should be.
Rileymasters do you access the crazies through the north west or south west side? Ive been told by alot of people theres alot of elk in the crazies but where I was at was void of any.

Jon Boy,

Don't give up on those Crazies yet. Look for an area that has dark timber, broken openings, and water within a mile. If you are seeing goats, you are too high. Try to get a little ways away from the grazing allotments.

Then again, there is very good hunting in the Little Belts as well.
