I have always said that if the firearm is in unaltered working condition they should be sold, but with the new direction that Colorado is going destroying them is par for the course.

Many law enforcement agencies try and stay out of the business of auctioning off adjudicated firearms used in criminal cases……even if they are pristine condition. One of the main reasons is potential civil liability if the firearm is used illegally in the future. Sad state of affairs, but the way of the world.

I caught the tail end of it tonight and it was around $10k worth of equipment, bows, rifles, shotguns, and pistols.

On law enforcement selling the items, I know that Utah did do it and am pretty sure that they still do. I've heard of stories of folks that had one confiscated going to the auction and buying it back.

Functioning firearms should be donated to hunter education programs IMHO. Then they could do a drawing at the end of the hunter education class for a gun. There are a lot of young hunters and new hunters out there that would love to have a gun/bow/equipment whether it be used or new. Make the winner pay to register the firearm with an FFL. SIMPLE.

Destroying them makes 0 sense to me. Thats govt for you.
