Seen Randy Newberg standing on a rock calling with a cow call tube.

Does that stuff really work?

What kind of tube cow call works?

If you look for the general discussion hearing aid post you'll find I can't hear. I'd only do it out of it working otherwise I'm fine just sitting there.

Same video he had a bugling bull come by - why he didn't drop down into the woods to shoot it is beyond me. Prolly video footage.

yes it does . short answer..... no type cow calls work till YOU master them. . any cow call can work but only if you can make it sound like a cow.

to add a little more detail... learn to speak cow and you will have success.

same as humans have different tones in their speech , elk do also.

if you bleat out," stranger , danger," in cow speak, it probably won't be productive .

if you bleat out," when the moon hits your eye like a big ……." you will most likely have better luck.

catch my drift????

Are the cow calls ineffective outside the rut? Like, is it worthwhile during the CO 1st rifle season?

I have played around with them a little out side of the rut.

IMHO …. they are ,less effective outside of the rut but not neccesarily "ineffective".
I probably wouldn't rely on calls outside of the rut BUT the rut is NOT the only time a cow will call or a bull will bugle.
in rifle if a bull is running a cow call might make him stop, look back and give you a broadside shot??? or it might not? elk do what they do. probably more effective on cows outside of the rut then bulls but I wouldn't say not effective at all. I would say blow them sparingly .

if you bugle during the rifle or later seasons in general, there is always a possibility a bull might answer but also a good chance they won't. I would not be afraid to give it a try but it would be pretty easy to over do it.

remember , this is just my opinion, from personal observation and trial and error.

would also say the more pressure the elk are seeing the less effective it would likely be and more likely to work on a small bull like a spike or a cow then a big mature bull
