Thanks for all the input guys. I went with the S&W Shield in 9mm. It came with 3mags and felt much better in my hand. It also came with night sights. $500 and with a $100 Visa gift I got for Christmas it was a great choice I think. I'll go out this weekend and give it a try but either way it's the one.

Thanks again for the help.

I know you made your decision, but I will jump in regardless.

I shoot USPSA with a G17 and conceal carry a G19. I use an inside the waistband holster from Kaluban Cloak that I outfitted with the IWB clips from Comptac. I'm big enough and built to be able to carry a midsized pistol. Not all are. I can carry my pistol with a t-shirt and no one knows. 3:00 works for me. When I made the change to Glock I wanted to be able to maintain one set of tools, parts, and magazines for all my handguns. Worked out well for me. Glock also lacks a manual or grip safety which is mandatory for me in a carry pistol. I also carry with a round in the chamber, and feel like these pistols are proven performers in that regard.

It should be a priority to find a quality holster that not only allows you to carry the gun, but has good retention, preferably without a snap, and completely covers the trigger. Raven, Crossbreed, Kaluban Cloak, and many others fit this criteria. A good holster is worth its weight in gold.

A little education and a lot of practice. YouTube or any of a variety of books will help to educate you about the techniques and laws regarding CC. I still practice drawing, though not like I used to. Muscle memory carries the day here. After 5000 draws things really come together.

Good luck.

For others reading this thread, if you are a 1911 fan and want something a little smaller the Sig 938 might fit the bill. I am accustomed to crisp light triggers on everything and never fell in love with striker fired pistols. I sometimes carry a Ruger LCP and have practiced with it enough I can shoot it well, but I can't say I like it. I grew up on bolt rifles and revolvers with good triggers, later moved to 1911's and I do my best shooting with a good trigger. The trigger out of the box on the 938 was terrible, almost 9lbs, but my gunsmith installed an aftermarket trigger and now it's at 4lbs. I will likely never need to shoot 25yds with a CC handgun, but I like knowing I can do it accurately.

I have gone to the Hornady Critical Defense ammo in my home defense handgun and CC handgun. I like the testing they did on not clogging passing through clothing. A 380 or 3" barreled 9mm needs the best bullet it can get I figure. It doesn't hurt in the bigger stuff either, my 45's shoot it well. All have been very reliable with it so far too.

For holsters I like the cell phone case looking ones that hook to my belt. I use a Bulldog for the 380 some in the summer, or anytime I don't want the bulk of the Sneaky Pete I carry my 938 in. I've never caught anyone staring at them or noticing they weren't a cell phone case except one police officer I talked to at the gun counter at Academy sports. He used one off duty and knew what it was, asked my how I liked it.

Buying guns is like buying a vehicle in a lot of ways. Everybody has their likes/dislikes. For me in a CC pistol, I want reliablilty, light weight, accuracy, small size and easy of function. I am a NRA Certified Pistol & Rifle Instructor and shoot competition in both venues. My KelTec fits all my criteria. Do I like the trigger pull...NO, but realizing that if the need arises to use it, the shot (s) will probably 10 yards or less. I can hit whatever I aim at, at that distance. I do like the feature of being able to keep a round in the chamber all the time and not having a safety to deal with.

Just sayin............

I also carry a shield, and I use the Crossbreed appendix holster. It is comfortable and can be concealed with a t-shirt depending on your body build. I move my belt buckle to the left into the first pant loop, so I can carry with the barrel centered on by body. This is the most comfortable and concealable carry option that works for me. Every person is different tho.

Have fun!

This touches on the biggest issue with CC. You have to figure out what works for you. I went through numerous guns and holsters before settling on my current set up. Had this now for years. Even have its twin sitting in the safe just in case.

I have a Glock27. Comes from the factory in a .40 but for another $150 you can drop a 9mm barrel in without any other modifications needed. I picked the 27 for that reason. A Glock26 would only allow a 9mm as far as I know.

I like the G19 (same size as the G23). As Glock's middle size, it is small enough for me to conceal with relative ease yet when I draw it, I feel like I have a full size gun in my hand. I had a G26 for a while, but even with the extended magazine base pads to give my pinkie finger something to grab, it just felt too small in my hand. As for the holster dilemma, I like Raven Concealment. I use both a IWB and OWB from them depending on my situation.

I really like my Springfield Armory XD-40 sub-compact. It is very accurate and reliable and the trigger is great on it. For most of the time I carry it in an ankle holster and I haven't found any better ones out there than Alessi Holsters. Yes they are spendy but well worth it. I had a thumb-brake added by them for just a bit more retention without being too over the top. Very quality holsters. I carry it every day all day in complete comfort and nobody knows you have it on.

I think you picked the right gun. I have a glock 43 that is about the same size. It's a joy to carry when hunting. Glad to see you got night sights too!

Lots of good advise here!
If you have the ability to try before you buy you should shoot as many gun candidates as possible. Gun ranges that rent are a good source. The 9mm is a great round, in the last 15 years we have seen bonded core bullets and other advances that make this a very high performing round especially in shorter bbls that we use for CC use. We also have access to street shooting results with these modern bullets, they all work fairly well some better than others.

My CC gun is a Sig P938 with 124gr Speer GD HP...... chosen because I can carry it in all weather and I can qualify on a 25yd qual course with ease. The Speer round has a great rep with police use/shootings and in reports from the autopsy rooms.

Whatever you choose make sure its of the size and performance ratio that you always have it with you ...it will serve no purpose if you don't carry it due to size and recoil. It is an issue we see when people get micro guns ... 25's , 32's and 380's. I have a LCP in 380 sweet size ! But I cant hit &**^ with it so why carry it? My thoughts are its good at contact distances only, but my performance criteria is being able to do head shots at 20 yds or less. Think about what your criteria for use will be.

Food for thought ...body armor is becoming or has become a fact of life for bad guys. Of the last 7 national shooting incidents 5 of the bad guys were wearing body armor. Also with the heroin use seen in this country, torso hits have proven to not stop aggressors.

just my opinion.
Cheers
