I am starting to plan my first trip to Colorado I am going with a couple other people who have spent some time in unit 45 but have not hunted it, We are going to go in on the west side of 45 close to the 44 boarder. Has anyone hunted that unit before or any tips for it? We are going archery probably the second week during muzzy season. What kinda of weather should I pack closes for? Thanks

Have hunted 45 but not way far west. Holy cross city area is as far as we have been. Have hit a lot of spots east of that over the years, pretty much everything west of the eagle/summit county line and east of 703.1. Have hunted around Camp Hale some and along Wurts ditch road. Have hunted some of the holy cross as well. There are elk there, but there are hunters too. It is tough hunting as it is OTC. I can't remember for sure but think it is a draw unit for Muzzy, so that limits the orange army numbers

Be prepared for anything from 10 degrees and snowy to 80. It can be either and anywhere in between.

Also be prepared for the altitude. It is a high unit

1st time I hunted it, just about ran over two monsters in a rainstorm. They were walking one way on a trail, we were walking the other, came around a corner and bam, about 10 yards away. Sadly that was in 2003. Most of the stuff we hunt is dark timber, so we see a few deer here and there, but those were the only big ones.

If you are thinking about deer hunting, I would just stick to one species....it is hard enough doing that.

Sound advice......or at least split up the hunt to target them on different days and spots.

I have spent some time in that general area and am probably going to draw one of the early high country rifle deer tags there this year. Regarding clothes/weather--I've been there in archery seasons and 1st/2nd/3rd rifle seasons. I have hunted in a T-shirt, and I have hunted where it was so cold I could barely function. Those weather conditions apply to just about all the seasons I've spent there. It can be freezing cold in the morning and down to T-shirt weather in the afternoon. I realize this is kind of a non-answer to the weather/clothing issue, but you really need to be ready for all extremes and anything in between.

There's a lot of private on the west side, it's hard to access due to the ski areas and all that stuff, so make sure your plan includes access, minturn had access areas but I'll tell you I have packed for a drop camp outfitter there and it is usually a zoo due to the amount of hikers, we would pack in 4 hours and had to ride at least 2 hrs to escape the crowds. The parking lots are usually plum full of cars on weekends. We never seen a ton of deer but almost always packed out at least one elk for our clients. As said before it can be 80 to raining and I've packed during archery in snow
