I wanted to share with you all of my experience hunting with my dad in unit 2. I know there are a lot of people who look to this forum for research and people's expertise in the field. I am not saying I am an expert but thought some may benefit from my experiences in hunting Colorado's unit 2. Unit 2 is considered a mule deer trophy unit and requires many preference points to draw as a resident and even more as a non resident. I know there is a lot of info on the unit out there with conflicting reports, so I want to give my synopsis of the unit.
I researched a lot of units before I told my dad to apply for this unit. I think that when you are applying for a hunt you need to list your goals and priorities out to help you decide what is the most important factors in your decision.
In my experience if you are looking for a unit to hunt where you will literally will be able to hunt as far as you can see, and do so without hardly running into anyone and get around the hills with relative ease than this is your dream hunt. For the true DIY hunter this gives you the access to thousands of acres where you will be able to test your skills. We hunted hard for 8 days and only saw one really big buck which my dad was fortunate to take. With that said I am sure there are huge bucks running these parts but do not go into this unit with the expectations of killing a truly giant buck with ease. There are good pockets of deer in the unit but much of the area has little to no deer in it. The unit can be overwhelming but if you put in the time and hunt smart you may have the chance at a great buck but more importantly a great hunting experience for those of us that thrive on the DIY hunt.
In saying all of this if your goal is to kill a huge deer than I believe there are better units that would give you this opportunity with a higher likelihood. I know I am repeating what many others have said in my research, just thought that someone else could benefit from my experiences in their future hunt plans. Here is a pic of my dad's buck. It was a 3x4 measuring 30" wide which was what my dad has dreamed about killing for his entire adult life. Congrats dad on a great hunt and I am blessed to have shared this great memory with you! Good luck to all in their future hunts. Jeff's Deer Hunt 2014 089.jpg

Thanks for the write-up and sharing your story. That's a great buck that anyone would be proud of. It's great that you could hunt with your dad too! Congratulations to both of you.

Congrats to your dad on a great buck.
I can't imagine why you would want to steer us away from that unit.
