Hello Everyone.. I'm new to the Eastmans Forum and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on Colorado's Unit 19 for me. I have a tag for Deer during the 3rd season and Haven't spent a ton of time in this Unit. My first thought is if the weather allows, to get as high as possible, but I'm not sure if this is a good decision or not. I feel like the farther away from roads I can get, the better. I'm just not sure how much pressure this area gets during this season. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

That's basically the rule for every GMU here. Hike in farther. Get there earlier. Glass like crazy and hope the day-trip pressure pushes them back to you.

How much time are you taking? The Saturday opener for any season is always crazy. But by Monday 90% of the hunters will be back at work. "Weekend Warriors"

Also bear in mind that if the weather gets cold in 3rd season the best place to be is in the travel corridors. The rut can kick in sometimes and that may be exactly what you need!

The way we are already getting hammered with snow and cold Temps, it seems like getting lower will most likely have to be the plan. I can hunt in 9 and 191 as well. I know 9 is mostly private and I've heard that 191 has a ton of pressure, which is why I originally thought 19 would be the best spot. Are there any areas specifically that i should focus on?

I've scouted a ton in 20, 191 and 8 which all border 19. Looking at the map you obviously need to get well West to get into public land, looks like only 40% of it is public. If it was me, with no other scouting or info, I'd be taking 52 or 63 west into the area then getting into one of the forest service roads as far a I could, and hike the saddles and ridges looking for transit and bedding areas. That whole area just got some early snow. Maybe you'll get lucky with some tracks.

Like MountainHigh said, get away from the roads and you should do fine, even in 19. The numbers in 19 aren’t like the neighbor to the north but there are deer. Snow sure helped last year so hope for some! Second half of the week they will come out to play. Find the does early and bucks will eventually make it out into the open country. Find young aspen patches in the timber and check for rubs and scrapes, bucks will be checking those. Good luck
