Hey everyone,
I am looking at doing an archery hunt in unit 16 and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for this area.

I am Afghanistan vet and I had to take last hunting season off as I was recovering from a spinal fusion surgery. I am able to hike about 5 miles round trip per day. Any more than that and I'd be out for a couple days.

The reason I am looking at 16 is that it has some ATV only trails that would allow me to get higher in altitude, hopefully limit some traffic, and it can get me deep enough where I were to hike 2.5 miles to get into some dark timber. I looked into getting a guide, but it's just too damn expensive.

Please let me know if you guys have any advice or suggestions.
Thanks!

If there is a road, there will be other people guaranteed. I've hunted there for the past several years. I'm not familiar with too many ATV trails that get you to any sorts of altitude, as the wilderness generally blocks the access. There are a few, but they get hammered HARD. The Zirkels are easy access for many non res due to its location, and people take advantage of that. There are the all day walkers everywhere and you have to hunt the nasty stuff and play the pressure. The Zirkels can get steep very quickly.

Agreed. We hunted the Zirkles in 2015 and got into Elk every day. We backpacked in and had a blast. Made mistakes, but learned a ton. Excited to get back this year. We saw some ATV trails, but most we just drove in pretty far, then packed it from there. Best of luck this year!
