I want to apply for just preference points in Colorado. What is the point of making everyone pay full price license fee and then refunding the cost of the deer application? Seems like more work.

Money.

Figure it out, just how much interest they make with the money in the bank at whatever interest rate that they are getting X the number of hunters that put in for the draw.

Which is why I don't give them my money until I ABSOLUTELY have to.

I would think that having to front that money would keep a lot of people out of the draw in Colorado but apparently lots of people have a fat stack under the mattress or a credit card because a lot of people apply. lol

It's less than you think it is with low interest rates. Absolutely negligible.

I see it more as a barrier to entry. If you want a tag they want you to be serious about it, but I get your point on preference points only.

colorado needs to accept CC from nonresidents for Moose, sheep, goat!

that's a bigger crock that they don't!

they told me because the charge is too great for their system/CC's. Which New Mexico has no problem charging cc's $3k for sheep.

I believe this year or possibly 2018 is when the switch will occurs they are accepting cc for non residents, if I've heard right with the new system that's how they are doing it now. I'll look and see if I can confirm that for sure

This was brought up on this forum under colorado, 2017 colorado regulations online now.
Some one said that he called and they are doing it online now so credit card is required.

Just a quick FYI - all the deposit money for colorado licenses is placed in non interest bearing accounts.. This is done by mandate you can look it up.

So the CPW makes 0 on the interest from licenses.

You would think they would make something but that is not the case.

If that's the case then why on earth wont they just let you purchase the point outright?

They have an influx of capital and are doing it for some reason to benefit themselves. It's just a matter of why...

Please let me/us know. I might finally be able to get into the CO game 10 years later... lol.

I do want a moose, but figure, UT, WY, ID, MT, would probably be easier to draw than CO at this point for me personally.

ID you can apply for - bad odds straight lottery. I apply in MT, but bad odds also. Too much backlog in CO and WY for me to recommend anyone start applying there. I'm hopeful moose see a significant recovery in WY once they start shooting some wolves, but I stopped applying there.

The best answer is just hop the border and go get one on a guided hunt.

CO system has the best and worst combined together, 18 yrs ago I bought an OTC tag and then started dreaming about getting a better tag in a different unit, 18 preference points and years later there is still several hundred people who apply to the units I want with more than 19 points. I feel like I am waiting for people to die or give up as each year the number of points in the premium units increase by 1 to guarantee a tag. Only good news is I started this in my 20's so eventually I will be the last survivor. In the mean time I send then a loan for several months each year and hunt in other states while I wait.

Non residents have almost a zero chance of drawing a lot of tags out here in the west. Colorado isn't the only state either were you will wait for 20 years or more for a better than average tag. Utah, and Wyoming are the same way along with Arizona.

But there are areas that you can do OTC for a chance at a 350" elk but those units are usually difficult to access due to private property in Colorado.
