Colorado Hunt Rules??

Hey guys,

Hoping some of you who are in the know can clear up some confusion for me. I was wondering if I'm Colorado a hunter can hunt both the archery deer or elk season and if tag isn't filled then hunt rifle season?

Like in Idaho in many units, you can hunt the elk rut in September and if you don't fill your tag you can go back in October or late November with rifle. This is for OTC. Not all units in Idaho are that way but many are. Nice long seasons.

Is it like that in Colorado or do you have to pick a weapon and that's it? Looking at their rules, seasons, etc is confusing.

It depends.

If you are hunting archery either sex or a bull and don't bag a elk then you are done hunting bull elk then the only elk rifle tag that you can get is a cow tag for any of the other seasons.

No. If you have an archery tag it's only good for archery. Same with muzzleloader tags; it's only good for muzzy season. Rifle tags are only good for the single season (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th) it was issued for. The only exception I know of is youth, if they had a bull or either sex tag and don't fill it, then it becomes an antlerless tag for later season. This doesn't apply to adults and I don't think it even applies to youth in every gmu.

Only way you can hunt archery and rifle is if you get a cow tag archery you can buy another bull tag for rifle, or if you have an either sex elk archery you can buy a cow tag for rifle, but you have to buy 2 tags to be able to hunt archery and rifle. Once archery is over your archery tag is void. And a rifle tag only works for the season you bought it for not all 4. So if you have an either sex archery tag you can purchase a leftover rifle cow tag. Or I used to draw my second season cow tag and buy my over the counter either sex archery tag.

A little more clarification needed here--the only way you can get an additional tag (for any species) is if the additional tag is a "List B" tag. You can only have 1 "List A" tag which are usually buck/bull/either sex tags. Most (if not all) List B tags are cow or doe tags, but not all cow/doe tags are List B (some are List A).
As noted above, there's an explanation chart on page 33 of the big game brochure. Also, every tag you can apply for has a notation (in the far right column) whether it is List A or B.

Sounds like Wyoming is a better deal on hunting both seasons.
