Hi All,

My best friend's dad drew the rifle either sex tag this year after 23 years of putting in. Have any of you hunted there? Suggestions on areas to focus on? My buddy and I are going to start scouting this weekend. Any info you can provide is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I wish I could help, but I don't have any good specifics on that unit. Congrats on a great tag and good luck. I hope to see some great pics after the hunt.

I hunted it for a cow last year. Bring plenty of fuel since the closest is like an hour away. It's a good area to use an atv to get around since there are a lot of two tracks and rough roads. I'll bring one next time if I ever hunt it again. There is a little campground I stayed at about the north central part of the unit. Rocky something. I can't remember the name. We saw elk on diamond, middle, and cold springs.
There wasn't a lot of private in the unit but there was a little. So I would get a chip for a gps just to make sure your on public.

I wasn't there during the bull hunt but during the cow hunt in early October the elk were in big herds. I would just get up high and glass. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Welcome to EF. Please head over to the new members section for an intro. Congrats on a great tag.

WRT 201...small GMU with even smaller summer concentration areas of animals.....during that hunt the temps will be starting to break and 2nd estrus cows will be coming into heat. Find the girls and the truly big boys will be close as they cleanup the breeding season .

PM sent with more info

Thanks for the replies. I think I know which campground you're talking about, Branden. I'll definitely check it out. I've got the GPS chip already which is super helpful. Good to know that you saw elk on all three of those mountains. We're for sure going to check out Diamond and Cold Springs. What's the terrain like on Diamond and Middle? Is there dark timber up there at all?

Yes that's true. I actually just got back from scouting. There is dark green on diamond peak and the terrain is kind of a mix of everything. There's quakies, timber, sage, P&J. I think I'd lean more towards diamond peak for the opener. If anyone has any experience there, would love to hear about it. Thanks again.

I shot a cow up there on diamond. I would consider using an atv or a beater pickup if you drive most of the roads on it. It's pretty easy to find the elk on it since it's so open. In the pm they will head over the top to the wide open to feed and head back in the am. At least that's what they did in October.

Honestly the unit is so open I would just get up high and glass. We saw just as many on middle and cold springs as we did diamond.
