Just about anywhere west of the divide. Lots of National Forest and BLM land, and while there is private property that you might have to deal with it is mostly open country with easy access.

You'll have to figure out where you want to hunt deer since the tags are all draw also what weapon are you planning on using? Archery is easier to draw than rifle. One good area for both deer and elk would be the Grand Mesa area east and south east of Grand Junction. Lots of deer, elk, and hunters.

Welcome Berns5 lots of great people and info here. Recommend you hop on over to the new member section for an intro.

If you are a first timer hunter out west and want to get your feet wet and see animals, I'd reccomend 18/181. Plenty of tags to draw and or leftover to get while you formulate your long term plan.

Call a CPW hunt planner and tell him your situation. They are very helpful. After you have picked a GMU you can call the local CPW branch and ask for a warden or biologist to call you back. They are in the field constantly and can tell you where to camp and where to hunt. Best of luck.
