Well - It's that time of year again. Looking at my points and options for 2018. I've been seriously considering putting in for a Colordao High Country Mule Deer Hunt. I have 5 points and am a non resident. According to MRS and Toprut - I have a decent shot at getting a tag. I'm 50 years old and am in good shape. I'm good with climbing the steep and rugged high country - but I also know this is probably going to be my first and last high country mule deer hunt because I have other hunts coming up in Wyoming for 2019 and beyond. Any of you guys have suggestions on what unit I should put in for and maybe some general advice on where in the unit I should concerntrate my hunting efforts? Your input would be greatly appreciated. I know this can be a great hunt and want to make sure I check this one off my bucket list before it's too late. Thank you. Steep and deep!

Be prepared to cover lots of miles with boots and glass to find the few pockets of bucks. Most of the high alpine country in Colo has a lot of land with few deer! Also, keep in mind season dates. Alpine bucks will be in the same areas all summer in velvet but once they start stripping velvet they often head to the trees where they are a bear to find until the snow and rut drives them down to winter ranges. Obviously the earlier in the season the better, but bucks also may be bedded for long stretches of the day if it's hot and dry. If there's a full moon and hot..dry they may spend more time feeding at night. There are a bunch of other considerations that complicate these hunts..you'll likely pick up on them once you get rolling.
