I am a young guy and plan to start investing in the lottery systems of multiple states and to start building points up. My question is this, in a bonus point state like Colorado where a bonus point can be purchased, if it is a year where you are not looking to draw, can you just pay the $40 and purchase a bonus point, or do you still have to pay the full tag amount and have it refunded at a later time?

That helps, thanks a lot for the info. So off the top of your head, what states do you know of where you can just buy a bonus point?

You also need to start thinking Preference Points in Colorado which are different than Bonus points that are offered in other states.

You will find that they are two different systems. In a preference point state like Colorado only the top tier applicants draw tags, they start the draw with the applicants that have the most points and work down until all the tags are taken. A bonus state will look at all applicants in the draw and some states have a hybrid bonus point type system where a percentage of the tags will go to the top tier applicants and the rest go to whoever is the luckiest in the draw.

So in a preference point state if the hunt takes 10 points to draw you will need at least 10 points to draw.
In a Bonus point state like Utah you might draw with 0 points and then again it might take you 20 years to draw the tag.

Right, I have gotten the run down of which states are preference point, bonus point, and no point states, just wasn't sure which states allow you to purchase just the point without having to pay the full amount

Wyoming is the friendliest state to purchase points in.

Utah you need to purchase a hunting license but if you work it right you can use the same license for 2 years. Just buy it towards the end of the application period and then put in for the point. Then the next year you just put in for the point before the hunting license expires.

Arizona you need to purchase a hunting license and might be able to work the same deal as Utah, I haven't looked at it to see if you can.

As was mentioned about Colorado, you need to send in the whole tag amount and then if you want to keep the point your refund will be $40.00 less than the whole tag for the point.

Unless you put in for Moose or Sheep or any other critter that uses weighted points. Then you can draw with less than max points.

txhtr333,

I saw in your other thread that you have a goal of taking an Elk in every NR state. That's a neat plan. One thing I wanted to point out is that in Colorado you don't need a bunch of points to have a great hunt. With research and a lot of planning you can be successful with a just OTC tag. I'm not sure if this webpage is completely accurate so double check the regulations, but it will at least give you an idea of the opportunities here. http://www.backcountrychronicles.com/colorado-otc-elk-tags/

What MtnBuck says is true for a lot of states, you don't need to put in for the draw to get a elk tag and if you are a archery hunter it is even better.
