As a NR, my total for the application (CO deer, elk/fishing, small game), came to $99.75. It would be an additional $10 for the habitat stamp, but that is exempted because I am over 65. If I draw the elk and deer tags it will cost an additional $1,058.50 I have always made a donation for S&R and habitat, but won't happen any more.
They hooked me on pronghorn points. I always figured I wouldn't bother, since I can usually get a tag in Wyoming, but now for an extra $9 I figure why not..

I saw they completely changed the elk plan in 444. I apply there since I can hunt after work on the way home.
Old hunt codes I put in from memory didn't work.
It's now been added to 44 and a couple other units. With the 4th season either sec tag being removed also.

They also moved all the cow elk tags in the 35, 36, 44, 444, 45, 47,361 units to A tags along with doing away with the either sex tags for the archery hunters.

As has been mentioned in another post something is happening to the elk herds in these units and they are trying to get a hand on it.

I should draw my 2nd season deer tag, my 1st season bull tag, and will more then likely just do a point for bear again. I should have drawn my deer tag last year, but it jumped up a point......

Jim,
I have not looked at the regs yet; So now the archers have to choose between a bull tag and a cow/calf tag just like they did with the rifle tags a few years back?
Thanks in advance.

Just in a few units is it archery bull only.

These units have had a drastic drop in elk populations so CP&W decided to go to bull only and there will be no limited draw cow tags in these units for archery. But you can put in for a cow tag for the rifle and muzzle loader hunts.

Do archery hunters take a lot more cows than rifle and muzz hunters? Why allow cow harvest at all if its a must to do away with archery cow harvest. Doesn't seem to make sense to me but then again a lot of things fall into that category

I didn't look to see how many cow tags they issue now but we haven't drawn one the last 2 years. We always had 2 tags up until then.
The local warden told me they had overestimated the herd several years before they took action.

You would have to talk to the folk that make the rules to see why they did what they did.

But in my mind and from what I have seen they are restricting cow tags, now why they don't have them in for a archery permit draw I have no idea. But since most archery hunters want to arrow a bull but will take a cow as the season gets towards the end may have something to do with it.

We all need more vacation time! I'm gonna have to finally use my 10 pts for UT general deer and bring some buddies to Boulder. Should be fun. Colorado will be more points for sheep, goat and moose unless I get lucky. Bear is available anywhere but need the time cuz I'm not going to not hunt deer and elk.

Mostly resident archery hunters shoot cows, better to just piss them off since they arent worth much, but keep the rifle hunters happy as that is a much bigger group that is worth more $.

It has been really interesting reading through what everyone has applied to. This will be my first year applying for the draw as a resident, I look forward to seeing the outcome. Are the different seasons weighted differently in the draw? For instance, do I have a better chance with a particular weapon over another? I don't archery hunt much, I am much more confident with a muzzleloader or a rifle. Best of luck to you all in 2019, sounds like a lot of you will have excellent seasons!

Me: Archery elk, archery deer, rifle bear, moose rifle, pronghorn point, fish small game combo. Will get another elk tag off the leftover 4th rifle

Kid: Muzzle elk, archery deer, rifle bear, moose rifle, pronghorn point, fish small game combo, extra rod stamp. Will get another elk tag off the leftover 4th rifle.

September camp out of state guys put in for muzzle cow and archery elk
November camp out of state 4th rifle guys put in for bull tags and will pick up a cow tag off the leftover

You'll just have to look at the draw statistics and see the odds. Some archery elk hunts take 20+ years of points and some rifle tags go unissued. It all depends on the popularity of the hunt.

HighPlainsHunter I disagree entirely on the cow statement. Put an elk in front of a NR who drove out a 1000 miles and they aren't thinking twice about it. In my years I have seen 3x more cows shot than bulls by NR hunters in OTC

LOL.

You think the reason that the cow tags were taken from archery hunters was to screw the NR archery hunters who shoot cows???

Apparently you don't seem to get it. If the DOW takes tags away from anyone they do so from the residents, not the non residents. NR's are worth more so Colorado caters to them. This is no different. Same with OTC tags, same with landowner tags, not requiring NR"s to front money to apply, etc... Residents in CO always seem to get the short end of the stick, happens over and over.

But as always you are entitled to your own opinion.

CP&W took the cow tags away from both resident and non residents in certain units here in Colorado that are loosing elk populations. They continue to have OTC bull tags for the same units.

As for NR shooting more cows, it has been my experience that they will let the cows walk until it is getting close to going home time. Then they are going to shoot the first legal elk be it a cow or bull that they see. They are going to tag something with that $660 that they bought

I'm on the shelf about spending the $660 for a rifle elk tag. If I do that, first legal elk. No playing around.

I believe total tag #s are based on herd population and management of each EAU. The Non Res vs Res tags explanation is pretty clear on page 5 of the Big Game Book 2019 lower right corner.

If anything NR hunters get the bad deal in certain situations....."Units with low numbers of available licenses may not have any remaining for Non residents after resident licenses are drawn"

Terrible terrible Colorado for prioritizing residents.
