Sitting on 7 NR elk points. Debating between a few units for archery season. Narrowed it down to 66, 5, with a possibility of 12. 66 seems like it could be a very good hunt. Low pressure and average population. 5 should have more pressure but maybe more elk. This is the unit that intrigues me the most. Its hard to judge because the 10 year DAU report is 10 years old. I don't know a lot about 12. Seems posts are hit and miss on 12.

Hate to burn 7 on a 2 point unit but not going to catch the other units.

Anybody have input on 66, 5, or 12. Not looking for spots maybe just if not worth it or a decent enough unit. Kind of don't want to hunt OTC this year.

I don't, but I am planning on keeping points a couple more years and cashing in somewhere around 6 or so points. So Im curious what you find out.

Obviously from my question I am not the best person to give you advice but I don't think you need to do that. After 4 points the only unit that takes more is 66 and then the next jump is probably 40 which is more like 10 points. You may never catch 40. So unless 66 is your goal no sense to have more than 4. This is just for archery so point demand for other weapons may be different.

Don't go for unit 12. There are no elk there and I'm burning my points for that unit :p if my recovery from back surgery continues with no setbacks by April.

Can't help you with the others.

Are you only thinking archery? What about muzzleloader? There are a few units with 7 points you can get with mz that average above 50% success.

Thanks. I didn't choose 49 or 66. The unit I chose had lesser stats and took less points but thought it was easier to hunt and had a little knowledge of it. See how it pans out. Looks good on a map.
