CO Unit 551, 3rd Season

Hello,

Hoping to get any and all info on 551, 3rd season. This will be my first mule deer hunt in CO. Not expecting anyone's sweet spot. Just hoping for some good information to get this flatlander headed in the right direction.

Also, what would be the best options for lodging or camping? Have a wall tent with stove and wouldn't mind that at all. I'm sure there will be a chance for cold weather. Am familiar with cold weather camping on multiple Alaska DIY moose and caribou float hunts.

The deer will probably be in the lower elevations in the West-central part of the unit by the 3rd season. Cold weather is a near certainty in the Gunnison basin by November, I've hunted 3rd season elk in 55 & 551 twice, expect near 0 to below zero low temps, 30's during the day. In '08 it hit -16 on us one morning and I don't think that's too unusual. Plenty of motels in Gunnison.

Like altitohunter said, I've always stayed in Gunnison when hunting nearby in the late seasons. I also seem to recall there being some cabins in Parlin, but that was years ago that I was through there. I'd jump on getting your lodging booked.

A lot more to do in Gunnison however. Make sure you eat at Garlic Mike's in Gunnison. Great food.

I'll second garlic mikes. We eat at old miner steakhouse once per yr.
