I was talking with a buddy who was recently deployed.. Asked him if I could send him anything, he says "Beef Jerky!!"
I says "OKAY! Anything else?"
He says "Nah, not really.." Me "No turkey killin videos? Duck killin videos?"
"Yeah, those would be good too"

So, he really won't give anything else.. For you dudes that have served... Is there anything that you really missed, that you couldn't get back home? If I'm gonna send my bud a care package, I'm gonna send him a Dayum care package!

Jerky Rules!!!!

Hard candy, (fireballs, star mints)
Batteries
good quality nuts like cashews
Bug spray (not aerosol)
Sun block
high quality freeze dried meals (like you would treat yourself to on a backpack hunt)
Baby wipes
Maybe an I tunes card

Watch out for stuff that might melt

Jerkey, candy (that wont melt), nuts/trail mix, movies, magazines. Ill try to think of more. Honestly it doesnt matter that much, when your deployed your just happy that someone thought of you and sent something!

Depends on where he is deployed / what the base has set up. Almost all more established bases/camps have a store where soldiers/airmen can get jerky, trail mix and other common snacks. If he's in that type then definitely go something home cooked like cookies and ship in air tight package. Home made jerky definitely huge hit over standard store bought.

If he is in less established base (not too common right now) then standard snacks are great. Send enough so he can share either way. Like MM wrote - when you're deployed it's just nice to get a little love from back home.

One of the best things we got was Primos sent us some DVD's and stickers. It was very nice of them and I almost always buy there stuff if I can because of it!

For some reason my favorite thing was peanuts in the shell. A local church sent us a ton of boxes of stuff and inside were bags of Cajun shelled peanuts. They were great.

Beef jerky, magazines, hard candy and baby wipes were really nice as well.

The biggest factor is going to be where he is stationed. lived on a tiny firebase most of the times I was over there, so what I wanted would be pretty differrent than what someone on a big base would want. I always liked the individual drink packs (gatoraid, coffee) to add to bottled water. I also had a Brunton stove that would burn any gas, to make coffee. MTN House or similar would have been sweet. I hated MREs, and we didn't have a chow hall, so any variety for the diet was great. Depending on where he is, good TP was a huge luxury for me, my wife would use it to fill all of the open space in the boxes she sent. She also would send all of my hunting magazines over for me.

Jerky is great if you could make some and vacum pack it that is even better the walmart is ok but cant compare to venision ot even beef if its not mass produced. Spices like tony chaceres and lemon peper salt are light end can be carried on patrol they can make en mre taste like something it aint. I dont know of any soldier whom didnt like copenhagen in the cartboard can many times they can get it but its in a plastic can and it tastes different. that was back in my days anyhow.
