I was hoping for some pointers on calling in elk on second season rifle. I?ve been told it doesn?t do any good that late in the season. Thoughts? And what works best?

By that time most of the breeding is done with. They might come into a call just out of curiosity but I wouldn't expect it.

After October 5, give or take most rut activity has wound down. Especially in the high pressure areas.

They will bugle later than that. But it is rarely to push cows and it doesn?t happen often.

Most big bulls killed after the rut are usually cruising looking for second cycle cows or they are in nasty holes recovering from the rut. Both require lots of patience to find and hunt.

I have had success calling in cows later in October using lost calf sounds. Occasionally a smaller bull or spike will show up with them but it is fairly rare.

Use a light cow or calf call once after you make an inadvertent noise on a stalk. It may cover up your boo boo.
(Seen mule deer fall for it).
