Drew this tag and am thinking about using an outfitter for the first time in my life. Think I am getting a little old for packing one out by myself(65 in October). Have always hunted alone or with a few friends. Anyone have any suggestions for this area?

I think Blaine Jackson of Cottonwood Outfitters and Lowell Prunty of Jarbidge Wilderness Guide and Packing. However, I think they may hunt primarily in the wilderness?

I have deer hunted that area before and know first hand how rugged it can be. I pointed out 2 six point bulls in my spotting scope to couple of guys who were elk hunting and they said even if they could get to them there was no way they were going to shoot something where they were.
Much of the country is really steep. Good luck on your hunt.http://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gif

Just a thought, you could pay someone to pack you and your equipment in to a camp and schedule them to pick you back up in a certain amount of day or when you call them with an elk on the ground. That would save you a ton of money.

Thanks for the info. Based on price, I will be looking at a DYI hunt somewhere else in the area. Probably won't be able to pack one out of the wilderness area by myself. Anyone have any suggestions on other areas?

There are several fringe areas that you can access without going into the wilderness, there are also several areas in the wilderness that can be accessed on foot without killing yourself. I had a muzzleloader tag for 72 last year. Pm me your phone # and I can give you some options that can still keep you within a mile of a road. God bless

The area on the east side of 072 in the O'neil basin had a fire about 15 years ago and is probably a magnet for deer and elk. There is a lot of lower country to hunt there are not as rugged as the wilderness. Cottonwood creek, Camp creek, Sun creek just to name a few.
Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks for all the advise. I did hire an outfitter who could only hunt outside of the wilderness area. Got a bull on opening day. Spotted him and 30 elk from about 3 miles away. Worked our way to within 2 mile of him with vehicle. Spent about 4 hours going back and forth on foot in the area and finally spotted the heard with 3 bulls in it in the area. There was a small bull and two good bulls one of which was broken off on one side. One was a decent 6x6. This was about 2:40 pm. Spent another hour getting into position. Kicked up a cow at about 60 yards. She took off and busted the heard , the6x6 bull was bringing up the rear. Guide blew a cow call and bull stopped for a second. I shot it once and it stumbled. It took off up the hill and I shot again. Missed. Hit it again with third shot and it was down. Quartered it out that evening, took almost 24 hrs to get it in a walk in cooler. Great classic spot and stalk hunt. Might not be the biggest bull out there, but I am very happy with it. Outfitter was Elko Guide Service. Thank Bill, you did a great job. Will post a pic if I can figure out how to.

Congrats on your bull. Can't wait to see the pics.
I have not hunted with Bill but we took a horseback trail ride with him about 15 years ago when my daughter was about 8 years old. His horses are very well trained and calm for those of us with little riding experience. He is a really nice guy and has been around for a long time. He knows his area very well.

Nice bull. We took my dad on his elk hunt there in 2012. He missed one like yours, but he ended up killing a smaller six point a few days later. That is a fun place to hunt. Nice job.
