What do you guys use for all the bugs in the high country. I took the family out last night for a hike at around 10000' and did not make it very far. We had to turn around cause the bugs were eating us alive. When your out scouting do you use bug spray, do you use the thermacell's? Is there something else out there?
Thanks,

I use OFF that is a cream in a squeeze bottle. Get something with the highest % of Deet you can find. I like the cream because I think its easier to apply and I get good coverage. Spray works good on clothes, but usually they can't penetrate clothes for the most part.

What I hate the most is the deer flys and the no-see-ums that are aound the Junipers in Spring and early Summer. Most gone now around here. But still some biting flys and skeeters.

I've had very good luck with a product called "Buggins". I can find it at the local walgreens.

I just got back from camping with family in southern UT. We were camped at about 9000' and the bugs were insane. Bugs were everywhere and my thermacell didn't work so all I could do was spray everyone down with deet, light a citronella candle and throw some green vegetation on top of fire to create some smoke. It was so bad that my wife wants to buy or rent a cabin for now on. Haha

My only experience with citronella candles out in the boondocks definitely kept mosquitos away!!! Problem was, they brought every other bug within 10 miles to camp and they stayed and pestered us until the candles were put out. Then the mosquitos returned so we just used your basic OFF spray.
