Last year while hunting with my brither in AZ we hunted for 6 days and never saw or heard an elk. Then we had a rainy day and it was like they flipped a switch. The bulls were bugling everywhere. It was the 3rd week of September and it was quite warm and the rain really cooled things down by about 20 degrees.
He finally got his bull on day 9.

Talked to my neighbor who has been out for 2 days. Really quiet here too. It's still really early and still pretty warm. Heh, heh....hope they hold off a couple of weeks more until I get to take the old smokepole out!!

My buddies and I got onto a couple bulls near Granby that already had harems and were bugling til 9:30 am. Evenings were quiet last weekend with exception to a herd that was talking from 2:30 to 4:30 AM on the rim above where we camped. Cooler weather and a waning moon will help.

Was up to 10,000' today and it was HOT! It was around 80 at mid day. Clouds rolled in in the PM and it cooled down some. I sure hope it cools down before M/L season a week from Saturday. I do know of 2 bulls taken last weekend in the same area I was in. Not to many hunters now, locals have to work this week.

Hit or miss weather dependent. Last Sun during the rain they were screaming until 1100 am. Harems are formed and the bigger bulls are starting to come down. Watched a solid 6x6 tear up the ground, buck and snort then bed down while his cows fed. Had a whole herd coming to us with light cow calls and a Montana decoy. Was going good until 2 more bulls came down from up high and busted the party up. Good news is as the moon goes away they are becoming easier to glass and pattern. I suspect until the first cold snap it will stay that way. We come down off the hill tommorrow after 8 days in. Will head back up for muzzle.

Just got home. I was up there from the opener until yesterday. Found plenty of elk. All were still above treeline where I was in 55. I did not hear a single bugle in 8 days. I had a chance at a nice bull Saturday but a late afternoon downpour squelched my stalk. Plus I didn't like being the highest thing around with all the lightning. Saw some beautiful country. Was my first elk hunt and can't wait to go try again. Good luck to all of you in the coming weeks. I'll be thinking about it as I harvest corn and put the winter wheat in the ground.

Hunted the first 5 days of the season and heard very little bugling during the trip. Saw a lot of elk, and a lot of hunters. As the weather was cooling down towards the end of our hunt we were hearing more and more, I would guess that if the weather continues to cool down a bit more it can only get better.

I was on a fire assignment about a week ago in WA and the Elk were waking me up bugling in the mornings at 4am by the time I came home. My pops just hunted 4 days in SW Montana and saw 50-60 head of Elk. All he heard was a few grunts and some mews.
