If I had no other options then I'd go with the .300 WSM, but in reality they are all unnecessarily large calibers.

I have a 270 wsm BLR and love it. First harvest was a coyote at 356 yds. I'd go with the 300 wsm, that is my go to caliber, all around hunting rifle in a Sako A7. You can load it up or down , lots of options. I load 165-168 gr bonded bullets and the spouse shoots 180 gr handloads. Nice recoil and fairly flat shootin'.

Is the build going to be in a BLR or do you plan on using a bolt action for the build?

I think that a .35 Whelen would be a sweet rifle in a BLR. Perhaps not a 400-500 yard rifle but it would be a sweet rifle.

Perhaps JimP doesn't know what a BLR is?
I don't know the ballistics on a Whelen but sounds like a good plan. Mine is the takedown model, never had it apart though after the scope mounting.
The finish is something not so desirable though. I would like to get the thick whatever it is off the stock and go with hand rubbed tung oil.
Shoots very nice and I enjoy hunting with it.
