It's amazing how they can lick their fur and get it to matte up stopping the biggest holes from bleeding. So just because the blood dries up you should keep looking.

sounds like poor shot placement. elk bones are big and capable of breaking any broadhead so I wouldn't necessarily call that a broadhead failure but rather shooter error to be polite.

When he shot was his front leg back or farward? Was your arrow laying against his side when he left? If you heard a real loud wack I bet you hit his front shoulder on the near side didn't get any penetration into the vitals. You would definitely know if the arrow was laying against his side when he left. I had this happen to me once and am fairly sure this is what happened to you.
