Boot Insulation

Education me on boot insulation. I have had a pair of 400g Danner Santiam, they have always kept my feet warm in below zero and snow conditions, but they are not the best boot for hunting the steep country I like to hunt. I bought a pair of Scheels West River, made by Crispi, 400g boots and my feet froze this year hunting. I would put my uninsulated Crispi Guides on and my feet would stay warmer than the West Rivers. Crispi suggested I go with the 800g Wild Rocks. Is that necessary? That seems like a big jump in insulation.
Any ideas?
What makes the Danner warmer?

No, I really got to be hauling some weight to get my feet sweating in the cold weather.

Same socks? Do the different boots fit different, boots to tight restrict blood flow and the insulation will not work as well in a tight fitting boot.

Same socks, even tried different socks seeing if that might have been the reason. The Danner is a tighter fitting boot than the West River.

My uninsulated Danners are warmer than a couple other brands I have with light insulation. I think they are just a warm boot.

I'm not much help but it feels like my Chrispi Colorado uninsulated are actually warmer than some of the boots that I had back in the 60's and early 70's.

But saying that I have not had any problems keeping my feet warm as long as I didn't try to go swimming with my boots. I had some 800 gm insulated ones and my feet kept the rest of my body warm with all the heat that they put off. After that I have stuck with 400 gm ones and they have been great for me. It hasn't mattered what brand.
