Any of you hunted much in the Bob? If so share your stories and pics with me, this year will be my first trip into there and this winter is dragging along and I need something to keep me going! Thanks!

My hunt there was a big disaster, nothing but wolves where I hunted. Its been a while so I would need to look at some maps which I did keep. Sorry for the bad news. Senery was awesome.

Disreguard my previous post. Last year I hunted black bear in the Cabinet Mts and the Bitterroot Range, there were griz and wolves but still some elk. Worse place for wolves was in the Frank Church River of No Return near Challis Id. All wolf and no elk. Plenty of griz reported although I didnot find any griz sign, only wolf and black bear. Thanks xtreme, I've been talking to alot of people who have been saying that the wilderness areas are all far beyond being simply out of control! I guess its just something I have to get out of my system though, I plan on going high in search of Mule deer, hopefully the wolves wont be such a problem up there! Im pretty much over dealing with them! I scoured my maps and satellite images of my usual hunting area and found some pretty neat Elk country in there far enough that I dont think I'll have much competition in there, i'll take the horses in there for the spring bear and if it looks as good in real life than I may have no need for a wilderness hunt! Thanks for the info! Oh how did you like the cabinets? I've had my eye on those for Mule deer for some time now...

HuntinMontucky, you are going to have a good hunting expierence. My hunt in the Cabinets was fun. This was my first outfitted hunt and it was a good trip except TSA and United Airline. I will drive from now on.
I like my time in the San Juan Wilderness though I have bearly hunted it. There is not a lot of game but its not crowed either. Horses are needed there but I have yet to take a horse in there.

Awesome! I've got all these wilderness areas right out my back door, now it the weather would cooperate and the snow would melt off I could start exploring!

I did a 9 day 11 mile solo DIY backpack hunt this past year into the Spotted Bear area of the Bob . Although I was not successful I am already planning my trip for this coming fall! I did see some elk sign and I saw my first wolf in the wild. I could have taken many mule deer or whitetail deer but I wanted to try for an elk. This year I am planning to hire a packer to bring me in and out so if I do get an elk I can get the meat out quickly. I also like the wilderness and the scenery is spectacular. I have a hunting partner that is supposed to come this year but I think he will back out at the last minute like he did last year. If he does back I am planning to go solo again.

Not in tract with common myth, elk are exactly where the wolves are. Being wolves do eat and they eat alot, its not too common to find them without also finding a food scource right near them.

The difference is, when there are wolves, the elk just dont talk. If you see wolves and also hear elk, your more than likely hearing a novice hunter.
Elk get VERY nocturnal, and supper quiet when the dogs are near. Calling to them just makes em explode out of any draw. However if you can get up high and spot them, watch them go to bed, then get in close and keep your calls so quiet you almost need to call with your mouth nearly closed. They will respond likewise ever so quietly back to you.

If you are so blessed to put an animal down, keep your side arm handy while dressing it out. Keep your shovel ready for after you reload your side arm!! Happy hunting.
