Hello, i had posted on here last season ,I enjoyed reading all the tips from the experts on here. My question is this: some friends and i are planning in a two night back packing trip in wyoming for fun. we would like to do a little grouse hunting while we are in the mountains,I have a gsp bird dog that this will be her first year and would really like to fine her a couple birds, so im looking for a spot that will have plenty of grouse, and public land. I stay in douglas (eastren wy) so would like to keep the drive time with in a couple hours. The little research ive done is saying the snowy range, a sub range of the medicine bow range has good grouse numbers. does any body have any thought or suggestions on specific places to go? any help would be appreciated, thank you, Jonah

Grouse spots are held more secret than elk spots for many hunters... The Snowy Range has some grouse but they are challenging to find to say the least. During an average elk season, I may see 5-10 in total (usually at the wrong time when I am stalking something else). Good luck and stay safe- there will be plenty of elk and deer hunters out.

The grouse tend to move up in elevation as the season gets later. Look for some areas with good berries, huckleberries are good this year.
Older clearcuts with some open ground, high mountain roads with rocky hillsides, clearings above treeline, mature timber stands adjacent to clearing and meadows are all places I've found grouse.
We see plenty driving the roads also.
I would contact the biologist for the Snowies, they will know some general areas to send you.
Plenty of grouse around but you have to find them.
