I forgot and left a camera out all winter and ended up with a black coyote on the card. I am not fond of coyotes at all, but he is striking. He would look even better mounted in the hunting room!
Where was your camera located (state/county)? An interesting looking critter.

Pretty common in the southeast US. Seems like AR, AL, MS, and LA produce the most. Hard to say if it's dog or wolf DNA. Some trappers that trap the same hunting leases every year will get up to 20% blacks on some properties. Fur is worth very little to the fur market but can have a lot of value on the taxidermy market or wall hanger/craft market.

That's pretty neat. We get some that are really black, but it's a color phase thing. When they blow the coat they're back to normal. That one looks like it would have to get shaved to not be black though.

I saw a mostly black coyote in California Zone X-12 this past season. He was definitely black and had a coyote like tail. I did not get a good look at his head as he was over 500 yards and running flat out. Too far for my 30/06 Encore pistol, unless he stopped (maybe), which he had no interest in doing. My first impression was "wolf" , but there are "not supposed to be any around here", and if there are they have been decreed endangered by King Jerry.

Pretty neat. I see black foxes around here once in awhile. More like once in a blue moon! Very rare. They are really neat looking. Would be cool to get a crack at one for a mount.

That would be a rare trophy for sure. There was a black fox around here a guy trapped that was pretty cool, I think that was like the black squirrel type thing though, not a cross breed.
