I am 22 and want to start putting in for some true dream hunt draws out west. I am not necessarily looking for a "quick fix" type hunt. I want to know a few units in Colorado that I should start putting in every year that would offer me my best chance at the always sought after 190" buck. Like I said, I know that to hunt those rare gem units, you have to put in your years of playing the draw. I just want to know what units I need to invest my time in

Just put in for pionts then decide what unit you want to hunt when your ready to burn pionts. Trophy quality and deer numbers can vary over a couple year period ie. drought, hard winters, fires

In short, all units could hold a 190" buck. Are you a subscriber to Eastmans? The MRS section does a good job at pointing you to the good and excellent trophy potential areas. Record books are another good source for where the trophies are located at. Gaining PP's could be needed based on the unit you choose. Some of these more sought after units can take 10+ years of PP building to draw.

Problem with Colorado is that those with the highest # of points get all the tags. Just starting now, you'll probably never catch up to the glory units in Colorado, and if you do, it'll be because the top point holders are applying elsewhere.

I think a better strategy for glory tags would be to apply places where you would have at least a slim chance of drawing every year.. Places like NM, ID, WY.

I would personally rather hunt a "mediocre" area every year, than wait decades to draw a single tag. I am only a few years into the world of nonresident hunting myself and have yet to take anything close to that 190" mark you mentioned, but I do know quite a few people who have taken deer of that caliber in easy-draw units.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.. Looking forward to seeing other folks' recommendations as well.

All of these responses are true. Colorado will have to someday pull the plug on the current system and piss some people off by going to a hybrid system. When that will happen is anyone's guess. I would start building points for now. LCH is spot on that places like Idaho are worth putting in for because you art least have a chance every year while you wait the 15+ years for a good tag in Colorado.

I like your suggestion on the NM, ID, WY draws. My situation is that I always have OTC elk options in CO every year to fall back on, so for my draw hunts, I want to invest some time and really draw that hunt of a lifetime. Honestly muleys are not my first choice for big game, but I would love to go on a few trophy muley hunts before I die

Any unit in CO could hold a 190 deer. I'll go out on a limb and say due to unhunted private and rugged country that the majority do hold that quality of deer. Take a look at the draw results and minimum PP requirements for each unit for each season and see if you notice any trends that just don't seem right on the high point early season units or high point late season units.

For a starter, you can still buy points in WY for 2015. I believe that it is too late in most other states. Every state is different, and it takes some time just navigating the process to buy points, and also potentially an investment of $$$.
