Best state to apply for mountain goat

I'm probably getting into the game pretty late relatively speaking (31) but I'm looking to start applying for mountain goat points/tag. I probably can't afford to apply in more than one, possibly two states given the price of the tag so I'm wondering what my best bet would be?

Ive heard Utah has the best odds because its a true random draw and I wouldn't end up being stuck in a max pool group for 50 years.. any truth to this?

Feel free to PM me if you prefer...

Thanks in advance!

I don't apply for mountain goat tags in any state, but I'd think Idaho would have the best odds, since there is no point system, and if you apply for deer or elk you can't apply for mountain goat (or moose or sheep).

I don't know who told you Utah was completely random, the only event that would happen is if there is only one tag for a given unit. I don't know the tag quota's for NR's so that could be the case in most units only handing out one tag to NR's so don't beat the messenger.

My best advise is save your money, Idaho is the only state that has the pure random chance that's worth trying for. But you figure in the tag and license fee and the years it's going to take to be the lucky guy and your better off to buy a coastal goat hunt in Alaska.

Idaho is the only state if you don't want to wait several years playing the points game. Having said that, you still need to purchase a hunting license that was $154 every year the last time I applied in Idaho.

A more logical option is either British Columbia or Alaska.

Good luck!

You really might be better off with a raffle tag.

Idaho is random draw but the problem is that the 10% nonresident cap really kills your odds.

There is no Lower 48 state with anything other than terrible nonresident odds on drawing a goat tag.

I wish you didn't need a guide in BC or Alaska but you do.
