AZ has some great over the counter Mule deer options for archery. The season is really long too, mid December through January. You end up being able to hunt 2 seasons on one license and tag if you buy one Jan 1 and hunt the rest of the month.....no luck harvesting.....use the same tag in December.

Mark is right Az has some good mule deer, but you really need to check the regs.because not all units have open deer seasons in Dec.so check your unit to make sure it has both hunts available.

Hoshour, You are very uninformed, Colorado is nowhere near the King of mule deer states! We have had terrible winters and dry summers. This has taken our deer numbers down in all areas. You are lucky to see any mature deer bigger than a small forkie. I would hunt all the other states! :p
Not sure I agree though it may depend on where you hunt. I hunted the west elk wilderness last September and saw quite a few big boys in velvet. It was a hot hunt though. I think you have to be willing to get away from the roads and trails and work your butt off. I will definitely be going back there when I can find the time. For the OTC thing, I'm not sure about that, I had a few preference points saved up by the time I went. Good luck

hillajam, I will cut you some slack since it was your first post. There was a little tongue firmly planted in cheek in my statement about deer in Colorado!:p Stay around the site, there is some good info. here. Why don't you tell us a little something about yourself in the new memeber section.

Have you looked at the price? That's crazy just for a tag. Their trophy species and antelope are reasonable but elk is borderline too expensive and deer is outrageous.
I won't apply in MT anymore. As has been said, their pricing is ridiculous...and I was only putting in for sheep and mtn. goats. I'm sure someone will pop on here and say something to the effect of "good, more animals / tags for me", and that is fine. At some point though, people are going to stop buying tags, and states are going to have to come up with other means of revenue other than milking hunters for all they can...and then some.

Don't forget the August 22-Sept 11 season in AZ too! Plus, many units will allow you to harvest "any antlered deer" so you can go for coues too, if you're interested and don't run into any shooter mulies.

I will be hunting MT for the first time this year, albeit mostly on private ground, I am excited to do so. We will be heading out in mid Nov. I also plan to swing by a few tracks of public land and briefly scout them out for the future.

Me and my grandfather are going so it should be a blast, he is 71 and this will be his first out of state hunt in over 30 years so we secured private land to make sure we had the most bang for our buck, pun intended!!!

With that said, I think MT (without ever hunting there as of now) has a really good option on left over tags. Being able to hunt in Nov is a major plus, weather could be a factor and for those of us who hunt whitetail we stand to miss our peak rut, but all said I am excited about getting to add MT to my list.

If a person was really dedicated and not afraid of grizzly bears I would suggest Region F in WY.
