Don't seem right for an ol man from Arkansas to give advice about spot and stalk bear hunting in Montana. The one place I know is around Noxon. Closed logging roads in any direction will work for spot and stalk bear. If you go north you will be in griz country. Wolves are all around. You do not want to shoot a griz, the penalitys are so severe. Some of the open roads would be my first choice since game retrival would be easy. First place is just beyond the turn off to Noxon going toward the east is a road to the left. That is where I would start, after you park walk up the left side of the stream. Look at a map when you reach the end of the hike it is not far over the ridge to another good spot and it has a road/trail coming in from that side.
There is a bar in the middle of town you should visit just to see the decor. Good luck where ever you decide.
