Hi Guys-

I understand it is still a long ways from April/2016 but I now have 10 points for Colorado Mule Deer.

The time has come to start planning on how to cash these in.

My objective (like many) is to harvest a very large mule deer. I have never shot anything over 30" so looking to make these 10 years of points really worthwhile.

I would consider any hunt option, but my gut is telling me the best options are late season plains hunt on private property. But again, I have not pinned anything down yet.

This next year is the year, I am ready to cash the points in if I can locate the right opportunity. I would consider guided, unguided, trespass fee or a DIY. Everything is on the table.

What are your thoughts? Feel free to email me or send me a PM. [email protected].

Thanks for the ideas!

I don't know much about the private land plains hunts, BUT I sure would not rule out any 4th season hunt. There are not many, but most are really good hunts being as close to the rut as they are.

Just sayin..................................

If i were you, I would do some research on the "early high country rifle tag". You should have enough points, and can kill an absolute stud buck in velvet above timberline with one of the prettiest backdrops for a picture you will ever have. That is my .02, and the best part is you don't need a guide to get it done.

Another good option.

Next year will likely be a tough year to draw. The season dates roll back and push those third and fourth season tags closer to the rut. Likely will being the point buyers out in droves.

That's the vibe I'm getting. Getting more interest in the 9 day 3rd if there's weather than the 5 day 4th, even out of guys with 20+ points.

The early seasons could be great theres no doubt about it. 3rd and 4th seasons would be great as well you really have a lot of options in my opinion. Even easter colorado would be great. I would suggest figuring out if you want to hunt the easter plains in december or early season in the high country or pray for snow and 0degree weather for 3rd and 4th rifle in the high country. There is also some great muzzloader tags as well. If you can decide on what season you are looking at you can p.m. me and i will help you out as much as i can good luck.

I'm in the same position. Always have something else planned and keep buying a point every year. Now that I can draw any archery tag in the state (almost), I seem to be drawn to the early rifle or muzzleloader seasons. I've got a new flintlock that would look great sitting in a big velvet rack.

The guys that consistently are getting the biggest bucks guided are on the eastern plains. With that said - a couple more mild winters the west side of the state should be getting back some age in the population. Good thing is you will have fun with either choice. Good luck!

If you go guided I would look out east. If you want an adventure and are in great shape the top early high country tag could produce some giant bucks.

Someone in the exact same boat as me. With the later dates I'd expect significant point creep in 16. No matter what route you choose you have to factor that in or you will be sitting on the sidelines again.

My buddy and I drew the above timberline mule deer rifle tag in units 48, 481, 56, and 561 for Sept. in 2013. It was an amazing experience/adventure and backpacked for 9 days above timberline. I loved every aspect of the hunt except we struggled to find older age class bucks. Hadn't rebounded from 2008 winter kill. We scouted for 4 days and hunted for 5 hoping to be sitting on a shooter opening day. My buddy turned his tag in before opener and got his points back and I ended up with a good buck. It was beautiful country and I can't wait to get in the alpine again. I would highly recommend an early season tag to you but you better be in shape if you draw it!! Good luck
