Has anyone shot an elk at medium ranges with the vld hunting bullet? The vld is supposed to penetrate 2-3 inches and then fragment. The school of thought is that you want weight retention in a big game bullet. In a magnum caliber like a 300 win a hit at close to medium ranges might cause the bullet to explode when it hits bone I have had this happen with other bullets. I am not strictly a long range hunter I will shoot at any reasonable range which for me is under 600 yds . Tell me hour story.

I shot one at a bit over 400 with a 185 VLD-H out of a 300 RUM. It did the small entrance, penetrate a few inches, grenade, base exit offside thing. Bull went 15 yards and tipped.

Shot a bear at 150yds. Bear was dead in his tracks. The 168gr Berger did exactly as advertised, I recovered 38% of the bullet. Shot a 325lb mule deer at 200 yds. Deer walked about 5 steps and was DRT. Very accurate, big BC, whats not to like?

That's very impressive xtreme, I'm using the 168 now as well however have not been lucky enough to draw a rifle tag since switching. Do you have a pic of that behemoth of a deer?
