While steelhead / bearhunting on the Grande Ronde river, we stopped at a known bear thicket that was full of bear scat and tunnels throughout the thickets. What was unusual to me and the reason for this posting was at the rivers edge there was a semi flat rock approximately three and a half feet in diameter, right on the rivers edge, away from the cover of the thicket, absolutely covered in scat. No scat except for right on that rock and 40 yards away in the thickets. Has anybody seen or heard of such crazy behavior from a bear before?

Maybe marking territory? Coyotes always deuce on rocks or hard surfaces so the scent is more noticeable.
