Well I finally got a successful for my Utah bear tag after 10 years of putting in. This will be my first bear hunt. I will be baiting (can't use a barrel) so if any of you have any pointers or suggestions feel free, and thanks in advance

Hollow out a 30"ish diameter by 20"tall log stand it up right fill it with bait then put a large rock over the hole in the top. The rock needs to be big enough that a raccoon can't get it off.

Most important thing I think is placing you blind downwind of the bait site, and having a clearing at your back. This keeps the bears from getting behind you and waiting till you leave to come in.

If your close enough to do it, bait small amounts of bait. Create competition. A large pile of bait allows them to come in anytime they want. You want them to come in when You want.

I also like to leave sweaty clothes in my stand after packing in bait in hopes it will acclimate them to my scent.

Bears will eat anything. Popcorn, cereal, dog food, donuts, bread, you name it. Once their stomachs turn meat is great. Until then they love donuts. The bait is the least of your concerns. Creating that competition where they want to come in the the biggee. IMO.

Throw up a trailcam in a steel box and dont hunt until they are coming in pretty good.

What unit and which season?

Congrats, I love hunting bears!

Thanks for the replies guys. Silentstalker I drew kamas unit for the summer hunt. I can start baiting the end of May. I live about ten minutes from where I want to bait, so with time hopefully I'll be able to run up every night to replenish bait. Most of the guys around town that have drawn before just use doughnuts and seem to do pretty well. This is the first year they have had the summer hunt so I'm hoping more Bears will be out, and I will be able to get to some better places with the snow being gone more. Should be fun.

I have been baiting for 12 years in Alaska with trial & error and have come up with a pretty good system . PM me if you like & I'll try to help you out.

Always bait in the morning,
They will come to your bait during the day. When you bait before dark they come to your bait after dark.
Cookie dough works really well, but use in moderation.
