I got this Antelope buck this year on a solo public land diy hunt the tag was a guaranteed draw for residents in recent years so I figured what the heck if anything I can put some meat in the freezer. I will say I have been in the area that i hunted very little, but I looked over maps a bunch and called the local Biologist and Warden to get a few questions answers and the work payed off. There was one spot that just stuck out to me and I decided that when I got there I wouldn't go in until the wind was right. Well the wind was right the first afternoon I showed up and in I hiked. I got setup to glass when I noticed below me at about 600 yards a antelope ear I swung the binoculars on it and here there was a dry pond below where there was a herd bedded just about out of site. I came up with a plan to drop back then swing around and get in a little draw that would take me to about 300 yards of them. When I got into the spot I wanted I could just make out ear tips and the tops of this buck, I really had no idea how big he was. I figured I would have to wait them out for awhile till they got up to mill around for my shot, about 5 minutes after getting myself situated a doe stood up then another then 5 then everyone was up and with in a minute they where all walking my way feeding along. As the first doe came out of the bottom I was worried she would get to me before the buck would get out of the hole and she almost did, she was maybe 25 yard away when the buck came out of the bottom and I could see he was nicer than anything I had shot before and wasn't passing on the opportunity. I shot, the herd of maybe 20 ran he keep with them till he crested the ridge beside him for about 5 yards then he was goneI thought no I didn't miss him did I? He wasn't 150 yards how did I miss him? as I'm walking over to the edge of the ridge. I look over and maybe another 5 yards belly up is where he laid. I pulled him out of the sage and let me tell you for the first time in my life there was ground growth! 84 5/8" gross 82 5/8" net public land diy solo hunt on a tag for a resident that is guaranteed I was ecstatic!
