Anyone have any experience in Unit 27? My brother drew the late rifle tag with 0 pts! We went up there in February and hiked around, rough, rough country...definitely have our work cut out for us. Just like to have an idea of the weather range and the elk's habit/migration that time of year.

Thank you much, JH

Get Google Earth pro, topo from Earthpoint, a Wallow fire burn intensity map, and a geo referenced Apache forest map and stick them all in GE. Find some of those little canyons they will be hiding in, then start mapping the glassing routes/points for those canyons.
Hunt em just like Antelope. Glass, range, dial n shoot.

Right or wrong, that's how I had it layed out.

I will see you out there. Brother also drew the tag. First time hunting in Arizona should be a fun time regardless of what happens. I hear it will be some rough country.

27 can be rough as all get out, but it's also some of the most scenic country in the state! If you have an archery tag, be sure to stop by the "arrow tree" and stick one in for good luck!

Ah just read you had the late rifle tag. Still a cool landmark to stop and check out!

I had my first elk tag last year in 27 sept archery bull, didn't tag out but came close... I drew the same tag this year so I'll get a chance at redemption!

Wow...you are a lucky dawg! My bro had a his first successful scouting trip two weeks ago, found elk and a kicker...big 5 point shed. Arrow tree is awesome...gotta be bad luck if it takes multiple arrows! haha

We visited the unit in February and you are right....very, very rough terrain.

Good luck to you too Fez

That's awesome. I haven't had a chance to get up there yet this year. Hopefully soon. Been super busy with work. And really the elk could be everywhere right now with all the rain we've had. Been a crazy May... Then it'll dry out and they'll be stuck to the canyons with water, then they'll spread all out again after the monsoons and once sept rolls around, lol. Scouting is a crapshoot right now, lol!

Sweet on the shed! I found this fat palmated 6 on my hunt last year! Never saw him though... Hopefully I'll find him this year!

Great shed coatimundi, mine wasn't quite as nice and was at least last seasons or possibly older. 247buckfever is my bro, as he referenced earlier. That arrow tree is one of the cooler things I've seen in a while. I've been trying to get out and hit unit 27 once a month to learn the landscape. So much land, kind of overwhelming. You'll have to stay in touch and let me know how you do in the archery season and good luck.

Shortly after this picture was taken, a bull charged my dog, about 10yds away from me lol.

Coatimundi, nicely done! I'm 247buckfever's bro, the one that has the 27 late season rifle tag.

Your shed > than mine. That guy will be a bruiser this year. I appreciate the insight on the unit, I'll have to keep in touch with you and let me know how your hunt goes.

Worst hunt I've ever been on! Last year I had the late rifle. There are elk, plenty of elk and some big ones! But... there are people EVERYWHERE! We backpacked into a remote rugged spot we had scouted. Spiked out the night before the opener only to be overrun by hunters on horses opening day. I spent my entire hunt trying to get away from people. That was my mistake. Get on something quick and expect the elk to be ran around. Just not my type of hunting. I've archery hunted for the last 15 years to be away from people.

Obviously your spot wasn't as remote as you thought, otherwise there would not have been people "everywhere". A little research would tell you how many tags were given out in that area. Also most places have a lot of hunters out for opening day of any rifle season.

Correct, but with 500 tags and most hunters having 3-5 people with them it was hard to get away from everyone. I did not have horses so 3-4 miles from a road in the breaks was as far as I would go. Just not my type of hunt. I hunt the back country of WY every year and would take that general tag over the late 27 tag every time. Now an archery tag in 27 that's would be awesome!! That's the one I'll be putting in for for the next 20 years :)

I had also already taken two 6 point bulls last year, OR and WY before I went to AZ so I was not there for something small. I passed small bulls and would have only shot something 330+ They were in the spot I scouted.

Monster bulls there like most have said they will be transitioning into lower country depending on weather the only problem is with the late rifle tag lots of big bulls that have been fighting and breaking each other all to hell good luck
