I have found that with as many ATV rides that there are out west here that the animals quickly learn to not pay any attention to them.

Roads that 20 years ago never saw more than 1 vehicle a week drive over it now has a couple hundred ATV's driving down it every week to the point that the road turns to dust.

I have also sat on a hill and watched both deer and elk just step into the thicker brush as a ATV approaches and then steps back out into the open as they go by. With the rider never knowing that there was a animal in the area.

I'm actively looking for one for our 4th season cow hunts and..
1) lots of used ATVs out there with less than 100 miles a year in great shape
2) problem is finding one that has records to verify the maint history

I doubt that you will find service records, the dealers are so expensive that a lot of owners won't take their ATV's into them.

I have done all my own service on all of my ATV's I do however keep track of what was done and when. The trouble is that anyone can just make up the kind of records that I keep.

You would be surprised. 2 out of every 5 I look at has really awesome detailed records. Only issue is the time it takes to run around and look at them all. Regardless, only speaking for Colorado, its pretty easy to find a 550-800 range quad, used, with less than 1500 miles on it......and some downright steals with less than 500 miles on them and 2-5 years old. Other than having them checked out for seals and stuff/issues from sitting.......the market is flooded with them.

I have a 2005 Polaris 500 Sportsman which I bought new. I use it around my place almost every day and do hunt with it too. Have used it in Az, Nev, Ut, Wy in addition to Colorado. Just got back a few hours ago from Moab where I road it there too. Mine has had NO repairs on it. only oil/filter changes. Still has original tires, but the rear do need replacing which I'll do soon. I have just over 2000 miles on it. it has a winch, ind rear susp and select 4wd. It is great and will go just about anywhere. I have loaded a full cow elk on the rear rack and got on and rode off with it back to camp.

I would recommend Polaris any day! I love mine.

AK, avoid Arctic Cat at all costs. Worst ATV I've ever owned. No motor problems just differential and axle issues. Way undersized axles that will snap under the slightest stress.

Kawasaki and Yamaha have been good for me. I have friends that love Polaris but I've never owned one.

I did end up getting a lightly used Polaris Sportsman 570. Rides nice and should do all that I need it for.

Thanks again for all the good advice!
