Just wondering people's thoughts on this selection and if anyone has experience with the Sig. I have a Beretta 92fs which I really like; reliable and accurate although it is very heavy compared to all the polymer framed pistols out there. Mildly surprised they kept with the 9mm since one of the criteria for the new handgun was better stopping power.

9mm has made great strides the last decade or so. The .40 does not give you much if any advantage over a 9 anymore. Plus 9mm is cheaper and tends to carry more rounds in the mag.

Agreed. Plenty of evidence from FBI and others that 9mm is statistically the similar to .40 or .45 in terminal ballistics. I thought they might go to a .40 just for the perceived increase in performance.

I'd agree with 9mm improvement using modern expanding bullets, that actually work for the 9mm, in the civilian/police market. But not sure I agree with the 9mm making great strides using military ball. If there is some new compliant military bullet that increases terminal performance, then great. I may be all wet, but if the 9mm is kept as the caliber of choice, it is probably due to cost of changing & other reasons not related to lethality with military ammo.

I am not the subject matter expert by any means on this subject, but one reason that the military uses the 9mm round is because it is a NATO approved round, and one that many of our allies use.

It would make sense to stick with the 9mm so they will use the same ammo while they phase them in. Im sure there will be M9s around for a long time. They should have stayed with the 1911.

I don't have that pistol, not a fan of striker fired pistols, but I have several Sigs and all have been excellent.

I also agree that the 9mm is a poor choice with ball ammo. If I can't have a modern expanding bullet I want a 45. The old saying that 9mm may expand but 45 never shrinks comes to mind.
