Is there a way to ONLY purchase preference (or bonus, if AZ doesn't do preference) points in Arizona without applying for a seasonal tag?

I'm trying to accumulate points for Western big game hunting, but I do not want to accidentally win a hunt when I'm not ready for the travel arrangements or expenses. But I can currently start investing in accumulating points for some bucket list tags one day....I've figured out how to apply for only preference points in CO and be refunded the tag fee minus the preference point fee.

I'm from TX, so the western draw process is very foreign to me. Any dumbed down advise would be greatly appreciated!

yep, in the Elk/Antelope guide book. Page 16 for antelope and page 21 for Elk. The draw closed already. You'll have to wait a bit for other species to open up.

And don't forget that you need a valid hunting license for Arizona to put in for the draw which makes it a little bit expensive if you don't take advantage of some of the other hunts that you can draw each year.

When does the application process normally open? How much would I spend a year to purchase simply a point for AZ Elk? What is the technical term for the "point?"

For the hunting license alone you will spend $160.00 then there is a $15.00 fee for the application process for the bonus point. All is non refundable.

The application period for elk I believe starts around January 1 and the application needed to be in by February 14th this year.

I suggest that you download the elk draw regulations and read up on them. All the information is located in it.

Arizona Elk and Antelope starts in January ends in Feb 14th this year. Deer and sheep will be coming up soon, check the reg's for exact date sometime in June.
You'll need to purchase a license 180.00 and then 15.00 per species per preference point. The license is 365 day license so if you apply right you can use the license for 2 yrs for points, if you apply for a hunt and get drawn the second year you'll need to purchase a new license to hunt and pay for the tag when you're drawn. Arizona doesn't require you to pay the tag fee up front.

Utah is coming up 3/2 is the deadline to apply for the drawing, point only ends the 16th I think. License fee is 85.00 plus point cost but that license is good for 365 also same as Az.
Now is the time to be putting in for the draw or points, figure out what and where you want to hunt thenstart visiting the states G&F websites for their regulations, cost, dates etc. also there are some good magazines, Eastmans is one that provides a lot of good information on the western states. Good Luck

One thing that Utah has over Arizona in the point game is that you can use the same license for 2 years if you play it right. If you put in for the draw now and purchase the license then you can put in for the draw next year before today's date and go. Also you don't need a hunting license in Utah to hunt just the tag where in Arizona you need a valid hunting license and tag to hunt.
