Area 48 or 120 for archery elk hunt

I have 6 PPs which is enough for area 48 and will be close for area 120. I am familiar with area 48 but not 120. Looking at the satellite views the extreme northern part of 120 looks like it could be pretty good for an mid September hunt. I am leaning towards 120 because it is also antelope area 73 and the antelope season in 73 starts on September 15th so I would like to bring my two boys and hunt antelope with rifle as well. Does anyone have any experience with 120 to contrast an archery hunt between these two units.

Thanks in advance

If you're familiar with 48 I don't know why you would even be thinking about it unless you have private property you can access. I have nothing to offer on 120, but the combo hunt with your boys sounds good to me!

Correct on all counts. I have hunted 120 and almost all the good elk country is on private also.

Dan, just a thought but with 2 boys 13 & 15 you could put them in for youth cow elk and take them this year and scout to make better use of your 6 points for next year.

The access that I have in 48 does not make the antelope hunt in GMU 73 practical. So I would be hunting a different part of 48 then I am used to or I would have to forget the antelope. If I hunt 120 it makes the antelope hunt very easy. I was planning on getting the boys youth cow tags. I have been purchasing PPs for the boys since they turned 12 so my plan is to return each year for elk in 48 where they will have enough PPs to draw one next year and one the year after. Between the three of us we have accumulated 11 PPs for antelope and I thought this might be the year to cash them in and do a September combo hunt. I am kind of stuck on going in September for a variety of reasons that I will not bore you with.

We hunted 120 during the last week of the rifle season. Saw 3 animals all week. All the elk were on private land and the land owners were not hunters so no one was allowed on their ground. Heard there were a few animals taken early in the season but we were not impressed by the elk numbers. Looks like Eastmans downgraded the unit from green to yellow this year. IMHO it is warranted.

If I had 6 I would hunt 49 instead of 48. 48 should be a 1 pp unit...and it is some really rough stuff.
