Hello everyone. I was just curious if anyone has heard anything about any elk being around 101-103 so far this season. I have a buck tag and a cow tag and was hoping for some direction. I know the numbers are low in those units so fishing for some info. I am leaving on the first and haven't been able to get up there at all this year to scout. Any and all info is very much appreciated. Thank you

Been hunting the Ruby's since the early 80's. I have never actually seen an elk on the mountain in those units but I know there are some there, I've seen a few droppings. I have seen them in 108 but that's not in your hunt area. I did see some droppings on the east side of the
alfalfa fields down in the valley last year antelope hunting. I think all the fields are posted though. I will be up there for the last week of the late rifle season.
Good luck on your hunt.

I too have a cow elk tag for 101-103, as well as a doe tag(which I already filled). I've been out the the Ruby's and Humbolts four times since August, chasing Snowcock, grouse, and deer were the main priorities for the trips, but also scouted a ton of country in hopes of tracking down some Elk. Worked the foothills and valleys down low, as well as packing in for 4 days up to 10k feet. I've seen no sign up high or down low. Put over a thousand miles on the truck in 4 days cruising back roads and stopping to glass the valleys and hillsides. So far nothing... My strategy at this point, and I'm sure most people's, is to just wait for the snow to fall and hope that will get them moving around a bit more.

Ya with the lack of elk sightings I'm gonna just hunt hard and try my best. Looks like a possibility of some weather moving in this weekend. Lets hope so!
Good luck on your hunt!

Hey Reeves do you have the depredation cow tag that runs til January? If so your idea of waiting for snow is probably your best bet.

Exactly. My buddy and I both have this tag... so no real hurry just yet. Hoping to get out there mid-late december and locate some moving through...

Thefe were some guys I talked to that said there was a nice heard roaming around northeast of currie but I never made there to try and find them. But I know better now than to apply for any of the depredation tags unless there season is like yours. Mine was only good for my dear hunt.
Good luck getting your elk.

Another unsuccessful trip out there this past weekend. Spend 3 days trying to track them down and all we managed to find was a little old sign... Started on the East side of the zone in the hills closest to Currie, hoping that herd was moving down to the valley with the cold weather. Ended up spending the last day and a half near Overland pass. Searched low in the thick junipers, and then ended up high above the treeline. Saw lots of deer out moving around but no solid leads on any elk whatsoever. Might give it one more go next month, but I'm not too optimistic at this point...

I was up there hunting deer all week and saw a decent looking bull and a spike in the canyon north of california canyon heading towards green mountain. Walking right up the road, we glassed them from the ridge above california canyon to the north.
